Audio Creates Space Before We See It
Picture a scene. A character stands alone in an empty room. The camera holds on their face, and the walls around them give almost nothing away. And yet you already know there is a city outside that room. You can hear it — the wash of distant traffic, a siren a few streets over, a dog barking somewhere below. You believe completely in a world the image never showed you.
That is sound building space. And once you start noticing it, you realise it's happening almost all the time, in almost everything you watch, usually without you being aware of it at all.
We tend to think of ourselves as visual creatures, and for gathering information we largely are. But for the felt sense of being somewhere — for presence, for atmosphere, for the conviction that a place is real and surrounds us — sound very often gets there first. It always has. Before any of us could see a thing, we could hear.
The first sense we ever had
There's a fact that the film editor and sound designer Walter Murch is fond of pointing out, and it reframes the whole subject. Hearing is the first of our senses to switch on. It becomes active roughly four and a half months after conception — and for the remaining four and a half months in the womb, we are immersed in sound, in the dark, with sight, smell, taste and touch still largely dormant.
Sit with what that means. Before we ever open our eyes, we spend months building our very first sense of an environment entirely through the ear. The muffled rhythm of a heartbeat, the rush of breath, a voice arriving from outside, the strange distant noises of a world we can't yet see. Our earliest experience of being somewhere — of being surrounded, of there being a near and a far, an inside and an outside — is constructed purely from sound.
Sound, in other words, is our original spatial sense. Vision is the one we trust most as adults, but it is not the one we had first, and it is not the one wired most deeply to the simple, primal feeling of presence. That older wiring never goes away. It's why a sound can give us a sense of place before our conscious, looking mind has caught up.
Vision is a frame. Sound is a sphere.
Here is the practical reason this matters for anyone telling stories with pictures.
Vision is a frame. A camera, a stage, a screen — each shows you only what it is pointed at. Everything outside the edge of the frame is, as far as your eyes are concerned, simply not there. Sound has no such limit. It arrives from everywhere at once: from behind you, above you, off to the side, from beyond the wall, from outside the building. It surrounds.
So sound can do something the image fundamentally cannot. It can build the world beyond the edge of the frame. The dog you hear but never see. The traffic outside the window the camera never turns to. The room next door, the street below, the storm gathering somewhere off-screen. The picture shows you a small, bounded fragment; sound quietly assembles the entire space that fragment sits inside. We construct the size and the nature of a place from what we hear — often more completely, and more convincingly, than from what we are shown.
The cathedral and the cupboard
There's a simple demonstration that makes this undeniable. Take a single line of dialogue — the same recording, the same voice, the same words — and place it in two different acoustic spaces. Give it the long, slow, shimmering reverberation of a great stone cathedral. Then give it the dead, close, slightly stifled sound of a small carpeted cupboard.
Play them back, and a listener will "see" two completely different places. One voice is standing in something vast and echoing and sacred. The other is pressed into something tiny and airless. The words didn't change. The picture, if there were one, needn't have changed. The space changed — and it changed entirely in the ear.
This is one of the most quietly powerful tools in sound. Reverberation is not decoration; it is information. It tells us how large a room is, what it's made of, how far away the speaker is, whether we're indoors or out, in a forest or a tiled corridor. We read all of this instantly and unconsciously, the way we read the meaning of a friend's tone of voice. A space we are only shown is a picture. A space we can hear is somewhere we are standing.
Theatre knew this all along
If you want to see sound build a world in its purest form, look at theatre.
A stage is, to begin with, a bare and honest space — some boards, some lights, a few people. And yet a sound designer can place that stage on a windswept battlefield, inside a gathering storm, in a forest at midnight, on a ship at sea — and an audience will accept it completely. Not grudgingly, not as a polite suspension of disbelief, but genuinely. They will feel the storm.
Theatre has always understood something that screen storytelling sometimes forgets: that the most convincing scenery is often built in the audience's ears, not on the stage. You don't need to construct a forest if you can make a thousand people hear one. The mind, given the right sound, will build the rest — and it will build it more vividly than any set could, because it builds it for itself. The stage tells you where to look. The sound tells you where you are.
Why immersive experience leads with the ear
The same principle sits at the very heart of immersive and experiential work, which is increasingly how museums, heritage sites, and entertainment venues tell their stories.
The entire premise of immersion is spatial belief — the feeling that you are inside a place you are not physically in, or inside a version of a place that no longer exists. And sound is the fastest, most reliable route to that belief. You can place a visitor on a nineteenth-century quayside, in a wartime street, deep in a woodland at dusk — almost entirely through what they hear. The eyes can be impressed, but they can also spot the seams. The ears, given a convincing acoustic world, build the conviction that you are somewhere, and they do it beneath the level of conscious scrutiny, where doubt doesn't easily reach.
This is why the most memorable immersive spaces are so often the ones that take sound seriously. A place you only look at is an exhibit. A place you can hear all around you is a place you have, in some real sense, been.
Even silence is a space
There's a final turn to this, and it comes back to Murch's point about the womb. He observes that silence carries a particular dread — and traces it to that earliest experience. In the womb, it is never quiet; sound is constant. If that sound were ever to stop, it would mean something catastrophic had happened to the mother. So at the deepest level, total silence is bound up with mortality, with the sudden absence of everything.
This is why a held silence in a film or on a stage is never empty. It is its own kind of space — a charged, expectant, sometimes frightening one. The absence of sound shapes a place as surely as its presence does. A sound designer works with silence the way a painter works with the white of the canvas: not as nothing, but as a deliberate and active part of the composition.
Sound gets there first
We think of building a scene as a visual act — set the camera, dress the location, light the shot. But a great deal of what makes a space feel real, and feel inhabited, happens in the ear, and often arrives there before the eye has finished its work.
When we design sound for film, for theatre, or for an immersive space, we are not decorating a picture. We are building the space the audience actually stands inside — the world beyond the frame, the size of the room, the storm off-stage, the city outside the window, the charged silence between two people. Sound gets there first. It surrounds us, it reaches the oldest parts of us, and it tells us where we are before we have consciously looked.
It always has. Since before any of us could see at all.
